Got a team? Will play DI ball.

This is a pretty interesting piece about small colleges making the jump to DI basketball. Belmont University is just down the road from Vanderbilt.

There is talk of our local University (U of I - Springfield) making the jump from NAIA to at least D-2 status if not D-1. It would be interesting to see what that does for enrollment.

UNC-Charlotte is going to start a DIA football program. NC Central recently jumped from D2 to D1. The trend is to find things that (a) are potential sources of revenue and (b) get alumni excited. That tends to mean playing with the big boys. My hunch is that it's short-sighted... but so is much of what goes on in "higher" education these days.

You should read "Beneath the Wheel" by Hesse.

I re-read "Demian" over break, and I've tried to re-read Sidhartha several times over the last few years (the only other thing by Hesse I've read is "Narcissus and Goldman"). When I was 20, Hesse seemed like a prophet to me. I swallowed his stuff whole. Now, I tend to be a little disappointed by unfulfilled expectations. I still think he's a great author, but it doesn't speak to me like it once did. But in fairness, I have a hard time getting into fiction as I get older.

And B, I think your thread on college basketball has now officially been hijacked. Apologies for that. Hope you got to see the 2nd half of the UNC-Valpo game last night. A 52-12 run is quite a thing to watch.

I only suggested "Beneath the Wheel" because it is a book about how education is about making people conform at the expense of stifling exceptional students. Hesse suggests that "those who can't do, teach" and therefore force advanced pupils into a mold where they are not made to fit.

It was just brought to mind by your short-sighted comment about higher education.

I understand. I was just commenting about my changing opinions of Hesse's stuff. I appreciate the recommendation.

That said, as the child of two educators, I've always been pretty defensive about the whole "Those who can do, those who can't teach" thing.

I am glad that a post about basketball spurred some discussion about education

I wasn't implying that your commment was short-sighted. Ha ha. It looks like I was though.

As for the whole teaching because you can't do thing, I am a fairly decent x-ray tech as well as a CT tech and I also happen to be very good at teaching others to be competent technologists.

I've run into people who can do not having the patience or drive to impart their knowledge to the next generation of learners.
